NFL Weekly Transaction Tracker

If you thought last week was slow with 10 moves, then this week was a complete drag, as there were only 7 transactions. One is discussed and, as always, the rest of the moves are down below and, for the first time ever, none are highlighted in red, as with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.

Buffalo Bills sign OT Wayne Hunter

Despite Hunter not having played in the NFL since the 2012 season, the Bills are taking a flier on the 34-year old veteran.

A third-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2003, Hunter has started 25 games in his nine-year career, which he has spent in Seattle, Jacksonville, New York (Jets) and St. Louis.

The last time he played, he started four games for the Rams at left tackle in 2012. The year before, he started all 16 games for the Jets at right tackle and was Pro Football Focus’ sixth-worst offensive tackle for the year.

So, why are the Bills taking a shot on an offensive tackle who hasn’t played the past two seasons? Well, there are two reasons.

First, Hunter spent the longest part of his career with the Jets, from 2008-2011, starting 21 games. The head coach of the Jets during that time was Rex Ryan, who is now the head coach in Buffalo. Ryan knows Hunter, so he is willing to give him another shot.

The other reason is the Bills only had four tackles on their roster before the signing, so depth for training camp and preseason was needed. Cordy Glenn has the left tackle position on lockdown, but right tackle is open for compeiton between Cyrus Kouandjio and Seantrel Henderson. Tyson Chandler is the other tackle, but he is an undrafted free agent.

It doesn’t hurt to add Hunter and see if he has anything left in the tank. Given that he has been out of the NFL for two seasons, that seems unlikely though.

Other Moves:

The Dallas Cowboys waive WR Chris Boyd.
The Houston Texans waive DL Brandon Ivory.
The Indianapolis Colts sign DT Jeris Pendleton.
The Indianapolis Colts sign LB Justin Shirk.
The Indianapolis Colts cut DE Camaron Beard.
The Philadelphia Eagles waive G Cole Manhart.
