For the first time in a couple weeks, there was a major contract extension in the NFL. This is discussed below and, as always, the rest of the moves are down below with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.
Baltimore Ravens re-sign G Marshal Yanda
Baltimore may be in the middle of a down season, but that hasn’t stopped the team from making moves, the latest of which is this contract extension.
The 31-year-old Yanda signed a four-year contract extension worth a total of $32 million with $17.8 million guaranteed. He is now under contract through the 2019 season. This contract makes him the third-highest paid guard ($7.9 million per season) and the highest-paid right guard in the NFL.
One of the best offensive linemen in the league, he has been a stalwart on the Ravens’ line, starting 110 games since they drafted him in the third round of the 2007 draft.
He has played both right guard and right tackle at a high level for the Ravens, but he has stayed at guard for the past few seasons.
Pro Football Focus graded him as the best guard in the NFL last season and the next best player (Green Bay’s Josh Sitton) wasn’t even close. This year is more of the same, as he is back at the pole position.
In general, offensive linemen don’t receive the credit that they deserve, but no position embodies that more than guard. Quality guard play usually involves never having your name called during a broadcast.
Yanda is arguably the best guard playing football right now, so it makes sense for Baltimore to lock him up, as he was an impending free agent. He didn’t become the highest-paid guard in the league either, so it was a good deal for the Ravens.
