The halfway point of the NFL season is upon us, but that doesn’t mean teams aren’t making changes to their rosters. One signing is discussed below and, as always, the rest of the moves are down below with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.
St. Louis Rams sign WR Wes Welker
One of the biggest names left on the market, Welker signed a contract with the Rams to finish out the season.
Welker, 34, hasn’t played since the end of the 2014 season after his contract with Denver expired. He had been looking to join a team, but a combination of declining play and concern about his concussion history––which he says he isn’t worried about––kept teams away.
Desperate to improve the NFL’s worst offense, Jeff Fisher decided to roll the dice on Welker, who at his peak was the best slot receiver in the league.
In his prime, he was a reception machine, recording five 100-catch seasons. In these five seasons, he averaged 117 receptions, 1,322 yards and six touchdowns.
After catching passes for Tom Brady and Peyton Manning since 2007, Welker now takes a massive step down to Nick Foles.
Welker’s ability to get open will determine his playing time in St. Louis once he becomes acquainted with the Rams’ playbook.
The Rams desperately need to improve their ariel attack if they want to continue to compete for a playoff spot in the NFC. (They are currently the first team out of the playoff picture.) A strong run game and suffocating defense can only carry the team so far.
While Welker may not be the solution to the Rams’ passing game woes, it doesn’t hurt for them to kick the tires on the four-time All-Pro receiver.
