The NFL playoffs are just a few weeks away, meaning contenders are seeing if they can find one last piece to improve their Super Bowl odds. One such move is discussed below and, as always, the rest of the moves are down below with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.
Carolina Panthers sign CB Cortland Finnegan
NFL stands for National Football League, but it can also mean Not For Long. Usually, this applies to the amount of time players spend in the league, but here it applies to the length of Finnegan’s retirement.
After announcing he was done with football in March, the 31-year-old is back, signing a contract to finish the season with Carolina.
He spent the 2014 season in Miami, starting all 12 games he played in and recorded eight passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Pro Football Focus graded him as the 72nd best cornerback in the NFL out of 108 qualifiers.
Prior to his time in Miami, he spent six seasons in Tennessee (2006-2011) and two seasons in St. Louis (2012-2013). Just two years after signing him to a lucrative five-year contract, the Rams released him.
Finnegan is perhaps best known for getting into an on-field fight with Andre Johnson in 2010 that saw both players ejected and fined $25,000.
It will be interesting to see how Finnegan fits in with the Panthers’ scheme and how much playing time is receives. Carolina’s defense is clearly one of the best in the league, but their strength is their front seven, even though cornerback Josh Norman is playing lockdown defense.
