In a week that was highlighted by head coaching moves and rumors, plenty of transactions occurred, but they were all minor moves that usually happened because teams were putting players on injured reserve as there is only one game left in the season. One move is discussed below and, as always, the rest of the transactions are down below with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.
San Francisco 49ers sign RB Jarryd Hayne
For the second time this season, Hayne joined the 49ers’ active roster.
The 27-year old signed with San Francisco in the offseason after playing rugby league in Australia for many years. He spent September and October on the active roster before being waived and re-signed to the practice squad in early November.
This week, the 49ers promoted him to the active roster in time for their week 16 game against Detroit. In this game, he earned the start and carried the ball nine times for 27 yards and caught five passes for 20 yards. All of these were career-highs.
He spent the early part of the season as San Francisco’s punt returner, before losing the job due to a lack of ball security. (He fumbled three times.) Averaging 9.5 yards per return, he looked good returning the punts, but the fumbles were a big issue.
Playing running back and returning punts made for the easiest transition to the NFL for Hayne.
Hayne’s story is one of the most interesting of the season, and now it is continuing and growing, as he earned the most playing time of his short career in his first game back.
