The NFL playoffs have arrived. This means that only the teams still playing for the Lombardi Trophy can make changes to their 53-man roster or practice squad (contract extensions and reserve/future contracts are allowed for the non-playoff teams). Due to this, there won’t be many transactions the next few weeks. One signing is discussed below and, as always, the rest of the transactions are down below with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.

Washington Redskins sign CB Cary Williams

With multiple injuries suffered in the secondary during week 17, Washington made a move to reinforce the unit for the playoffs.

Against Dallas, the NFC East champions lost cornerback Dashaun Phillips and safety Kyshoen Jarrett to injuries. Phillips has a chance to play Sunday against Green Bay, but Jarrett was placed on injured reserve.

Needing another defensive back, the Redskins turned to Williams, a 31-year-old veteran who spent most of the season with Seattle.

In the offseason, the Seahawks signed him to a three-year contract worth $18 million, but they cut him in December. He started 10 games for Seattle before being a healthy inactive for two games. After week 13, Seattle decided to release him.

Playing 637 snaps, he recorded 46 tackles, four passes defensed, one sack and one forced fumble and is graded as Pro Football Focus’ No. 76 cornerback.

Since entering the NFL as a seventh round pick in 2008, this is Williams’ fifth NFL team. He previously played for Tennessee, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Seattle.

While Williams isn’t a top-notch coverage corner, he is a veteran who knows the league and has received two contracts worth a combined total of more than $30 million the past few seasons.

Washington needed help in the secondary and Williams was the best cornerback on the market.
