Now that the flurry of the first two weeks are over, free agency has started to slow down. Some quality players can still be found, but there is a reason why they haven’t signed yet. One signing is discussed below and, as always, the rest of the transactions are down below with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.
Cleveland Browns sign QB Robert Griffin III
After seeing multiple important free agents leave, the Browns made their biggest move of free agency, signing the well-known Griffin.
Griffin, 26, signed a two-year contract worth $15 million with $6.75 million guaranteed. Another $7 million is available in incentives, which gives the contract a maximum value of $22 million.
This may seem like a lot of money for a player who was a third-string quarterback last season, but the quarterback market has become extremely expensive, meaning even fringe starters are paid handsomely.
He didn’t appear in any games last season, and his last start was in week 17 of 2014. That year, he played in nine games (seven starts) while throwing for 1,694 yards, four touchdowns, six interceptions, completing 68.7 percent of his passes with a quarterback rating of 86.9.
A lot of time has passed since he took the league by storm as a rookie in 2012, after the Washington Redskins selected him second overall.
He failed to develop as a quarterback after his Pro Bowl rookie year, hindered by a few injuries, including a torn ACL suffered at the end of 2012.
In Cleveland, he isn’t going to be guaranteed a starting spot. The Browns still have veteran Josh McCown on the roster and very well could select Carson Wentz or Jared Goff with the second pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
The addition of Griffin makes it likely that the Browns will attempt to trade McCown.
Signing with Cleveland is a good idea for Griffin, as he joins head coach Hue Jackson who is known as one of the better offensive minds in the game and knows how to get the most out of a quarterback.
For the Browns, the team’s revolving door of quarterbacks continues.
